Frequently Asked Questions and answers here:
1. Q - How much for the kit ?
A
: The price for the kit is SEK4950.- not including shipping costs.
2. Q - Can I get all the SMD:s premounted on the boards?
A.
Yes for an additional charge of SEK375.- we also ship the A and B-boards (analogue) with all the SMD:s in place.
3. Q
- What is included in the kit?
A:
All components and hardware needed to build the kit. The A and B-boards are for the analog part. The Controller (C) and Digital (D) board come pre-assembled, programmed and tested
4. Q
- What information is needed for the order?
A
. Send an e-mail to SM4DHN Lars-Bertil info(a)labetech.se with the following details:
Name, Callsign, Postal adress. Type of kit (preassembled or not)
In a confirmation e-mail, you will then get the payment details.
5. Q - Does the kit get a serial number?
A
: Yes we will give the kits a serial number. All orders will be logged in a separate homepage so that you can keep track of "your" order with serial number and shipping-information. Look in the order log for details.
6. Q - What tools and instruments are needed for assembly ?
A: Basic tools like a good quality soldering iron, solder and hand tools. For alignment an universal digital instrument does a good job. An extra reciever, a frequency counter and an oscilloscope is great to have for good measurement control. Further information is given in the building instructions page.
7. Q. Where can i get support if something fails?
A. 1. First of all you should consult the manual for the kit building.
2. Share your thoughts and questions with kitbuilders in the Yahoogroup: QROlle
3. Ask the designers. Analog SM6DJH Olle ( sm6djh(a)ssa.se ), Digital SM5DEH Nils (sm5deh(a)ssa.se), Components SM4DHN Lars-Bertil (sm4dhn(a)labetech.se)
8. Q - National language support?
A. Early on in the project we decided to stick to having all documentation in English. This so that we would make it easier to keep track of information and also make it easier for people from outside of Sweden to understand the project. We though have some documentation in Swedish.

This is the back side of the rig with the analog boards A and B mounted to the back plate before going into the case. Looks nice doesn´t it?!

Presentation at the yearly assembly for SSA in Sweden. April 18 2009. QROlle was there!

In the picture you see SM6DJH Olle and SM5DEH Nils in a rare quiet moment during the exebition April 18 2009. The QROlle is on stand and a lot of interested OM:s stopped by asking questions and signing up for the upcoming kit.

QROlle was there !

On the desk you see the QROlle rigs on display. Far down in the middle you can see the brand new Remote Rig Controller by SM5DEH. With that you can remote control a QROlle or other rig via CAT commands. In white shirt SM0JZT Tilman. SM5DEH Nils peeks out behind the guy in brown jacket. On the desk next to ours SM2O Mikael displayed the very interesting remoterig devices. With that you can run your station remote over Internet. Not just the QROlle....

News:
June 24. SM7EOI Tobbe has done some valuable updates to the QROlle II firmware. We now have a working feature for low power tuning of the antenna with teh QROlle II. You can download the binary and manual here. Thank you Tobbe for your work!!
April 7. A updated QROlle-presentation is now ready to download (pdf). It will be used for presentations by the QROlle-team during 2010.
Mar 31.
QROlle #5 is now remotecontrolled over the Internet using "remoterig-equipment". This is possible as the QROlle is CAT-controllable. We will be remotecontrolling the QROlle from the NRRL and SSA-meeting in April 2010. Come and see/try.
Mar 24.
A number of new QROlle-stations are now QRV on the bands. Have a look and see in the log and you see who has a kit and who is on. Make sure you update the team on status of things.
Mar 17.
A minor but annoying bug has been sorted by SM7EOI. You can find the new firmware for download in the building pages.
Mar6.
Please report to to us (info(a)qrolle.se) how you are doing with your building progress of your kit. Especially we are of course very interested in knowing when you are done and ready for the air.
Jan30.
SM6DJH Olle has made some updates to the building instructions for the SMD preassembled kits. Pls download the most recent document (Found here) before you build your kit.
Jan21. SM7EOI Torbjorn has done a great job in tweaking the code in the QROlle for enhanced the functionality. The updated version of the software is ready for download in the building pages.

"Old news" moved to news archive

The previous QROlle (Classic) has been a tremendous success and we would like to thank you all very much for the interest, feedback and support in this project. When Olle SM6DJH and Tilman SM0JZT started the project we could not have imagined where it would end up. No one would imagine that we not just designed, documented and presented the project in the SSA magazine QTC. We also got a huge interest from the neighbour countires Finland, Denmark and Norway. We shipped 178 kits to builders in all these countries.

YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO KNOW WHAT YOUR RIG DOES. NOT JUST THAT IT DOES IT.

So, what about the specs?
Here are the basic outlines that are implemented in the current prototype.

  • Support for the bands 160, 80, 40, 30, 20, 17m, SSB/CW. 10W output (variable)
  • Single IF of 5 Mhz. Similar in design as the previous QROlle.
  • DDS to handle VFO-signal
  • Microprocessor control using ATMEL ARM-processor.
  • Software is to be "open-sourced" so we offer builders to contribute to software coding. All official releases will be controlled by SM5DEH in the designer team.
  • On board programming interface to support software upgrade when available. Standard programming interfaces used for ease of use.
  • Remote control using USB-interface and RS232.
  • Software driven user interface with menus.
  • Built in bug software for bug and Iambic A/B
  • Professional grade Hammond case
  • Only 240mA current drawn at RX (200mA with dimmed backlight).
  • Built using SMD components. A majority of the components being of size 0805. The QROlle Classic was built using SMD:s of the type 1206. This is one of the few kit-type rig:s in the world using SMD:s.

Who is afraid of SMD:s ? You should not be !
One of the great things with assembling the QROlle is that it is built using Surface Mounted Devices. The normal size of the devices are "0805".

This is the CPU of the QROlle NG front. And, yes it has been hand soldered. So have a look below and see how you do that.

Have fun with SMD:s. Why not give it a try ?? Go out there and pick up a simple KIT and try it out. And thus be prepared for the QROlle. For those who want to understand how to work with SMD:s we have linked in a video from YouTube.

Here you have all the 18 coils to turn for the QROlle mkII. Nice looking !!

We have our own QSL-card on print for the QROlle-team. So watch this space and you will be sent one of these great card. On the front panel you can see the final (hopefully) design of the front panel markings. Card to be printed by LZ1JZ
